PRODUCTION DIARY
Thursday 7th of February
Today we recorded a group introduction for the Ufilms Oscars Rundown. The purpose of the video is to make people aware that after half term we will be releasing a series of Oscars videos, one a day, for two weeks. The video was relatively easy to film and didn't present any major challenges however we did struggle to fit all of our presenters into the video as the black backdrop we were using was missing a pole and therefor shorter than usual. The black backdrop is the main part of our set, we wanted a sleek simple look to the videos so a nice simplistic set works. We've also added chairs and golden Oscars as part of the set dressing.
We had to draft some of the first year students to help us film it as we were all in front of the camera this time around.
The premise for the video is simple, a quick message to alert people about the upcoming Ufilms Oscars Rundown. Filming the video wasn't too difficult we had two shots, a tracking shot using the track which would move away from Danniella, Matty and Kane as they delivered their lines and then we cut to a crane shot in order to capture all the presenters. Danniella, Matty and Kane told the audience about the Rundown and then we ended the video by all saying 'Ufilms Oscars Rundown' so we all featured.

Adam and Rhys - History of the Oscars
Today we began filming for the Ufilms Oscars Rundown and with the first video going out tonight it has been a hectic but productive day.
We started the day by filming the first video, which is schedule for tonight. This video was the History of the Oscars video and was presented by Adam and Rhys who would be opening our series by giving a fun but informative talk about the Oscars history. Filming this video went well and didn't take too long however we did run over a little as Adam and Rhys really struggled to remember the lines they had written for themselves. Despite this their presenting was excellent.
For this shoot I worked as a camera operator and my Job was to set up my camera correctly and ensure it was rolling when the director said so I also had to make sure that the boom never dipped into my shot.
Danniella and Matthew - Fashion of the Oscars
The second shoot of the day was Danniella and Matthews first video, I was camera operator again carrying out the same roll as I did previously. This shoot went very well and Danniella and Matthew did a fantastic job presenting, we compared them to a young Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofiled because they were that charismatic. This video is scheduled for Tuesday giving Danniella and Matthew the rest of today and tomorrow to edit it.
Chloe - Iconic Moments of the Oscars
We filmed an extra video today too, Chloes video about iconic moments of the Oscars, it was a small shoot as the video only starred Chloe and wasn't very long. We did this shoot with minimal crew as both the previous videos we shot today were being edited. I was Camera operator again and we completed the video at around 4pm, it was a very long day. Hopefully it will all be worth it when the videos are up on the Ufilms channel.

Jordan - Facts about the Oscars
Jordan was up first today with a video similar in style to Chloe's, we used the same set as Chloe's with the cameras set up in the same manor. Jordan had written a script for his video and knew it well however sometimes his delivery was hindered by his stutters. Despite this Jordan did well. and filming went smoothly. The only real issues once again where lighting and shadows, due to our lack of good lights lighting these sets has been the hardest task.
Myself and Ben - Oscars Music Rundown
Next it was the turn of myself and my presenting partner Ben, our video was all about music and is due to be uploaded on Thursday which means I will have to spend most of tomorrows lesson editing. Obviously as I was presenting in this video I did not have a crew role.
The only issue with filming was that Myself and Ben couldn't decide weather to off the script or improvise our discussion about the music. Luckily I had planned for both scenarios making sure to conduct lots of research so I could hold a conversation about the topic and also writing a script just in case. It became apparent in filming that Ben had not done any research and at times had no idea what to say, obviously he's never been on camera before so speaking may not have been natural to him but I was annoyed by the lack of research he had conduct it made himself look unprofessional and knowledgeable. I even told Ben what to research so he was prepared, luckily I had the initiative to write a script for him so that he could just pretend to know what he was talking about. Despite this filming did not take that long and in the end we got everything we needed. I broke the video up into 4 segments which meant as presenters it was easier as if we made a mistake we could restart from a section and not have to start the whole thing again.
The set looked good and the guitar prop joke was funny, as well as this the shots looked nice and the lighting was fine so all was good. As well as this me and Ben had our makeup done before the video so we looked HD ready, it's important a presenter looks good when presenting because it means people are more likely to take notice of them. Makeup didn't take to long and I have to confess that I didn't mind it, it made me look much better and ready for TV screens.
Danniella and Matthew - Oscars Makeup
Danniella and Matthew shot there second video today too, I was director and DOP. The video was makeup tutorial and other than setting up the lighting it was a pretty easy shoot for the crew as the video was unscripted and had to be done in one take. We under estimated the time it would take the make up artist to do the make up and the video ran without a cut for 58 minutes! Rhys Collins held the Boom mic up for 58 minutes! What a legendary human being, he nearly collapsed afterwards.

Jess- Nomination Process
In our first shoot of the day I was not a crew member but again in front of the camera for Jess's video. The premise was that Jess was mine and Kanes teacher telling us about all the complicated bits behind the Oscars. Filming went fine and it was a relatively easy shoot as Jess was very prepared and knew all of her lines, her presenting was also fantastic.
Danniella and Matthew - Fashion Show
Next Danniella and Matthew filmed their 3rd video and final pre Oscars video, I was also staring in this video modelling a suit but whilst I wasn't on screen I was also acting as a camera operator. I had the camera in charge of tracking the models as they came out from behind the curtain. The biggest issue of the shoot was getting the curtain up to hide the equipment in the background, it took us ages to figure out how to hang it and eventually someone had to stand and hold it all shoot. Original I had planned to edit my video today but with me starring in both of the videos I did not get the opportunity to but that is fine because it isn't due up until Thursday.
Thursday the 23rd of February
Unfortunately there was a problem with some of Jess's footage going missing from the day before meaning that early Thursday morning we had to do a re shoot for her meaning I was behind the camera again as one of her pupils. After this I began editing the Music Rundown video and was therefor not present at the rest of the days shoots. Matty and Kane also shot today.
Monday 27th of February
Matty and Kane - Oscars Reactions
Today we shot the first post Oscars video starring Matty and Kane, they talked about last nights Oscars and gave their views and opinions on the event. I was director of photography on this shoot and it went very well, Matty and Kane were well prepared and knew exactly what they wanted to say so it was a very efficient shoot. I was in charge of making sure that all the cameras were set up and framed correctly as well as ensuring the lighting was right and that there were no shadows on the hosts. As well as this we used the mic stands today for the first time meaning that we didn't have to have a boom operator. We also set up two mics on mic stands in order to improve our audio quality and use stereo audio channels. The video would be going up the same day that it was filmed so the guys had very limited time to film it. Unfortunately Jess was off poorly today meaning that there isn't any photographic evidence of todays shoots.
Danniella and Matthew - Fashion at the Oscars
The second shoot of the day was Danniella and Matthews fourth shoot, their first post Oscars video. On this shoot I was camera operator again. again another nice and easy shoot because Danniella and Matthew were very natural on camera together.
Tuesday 28th of February
Adam and Rhys - Oscars After party
Another day another dollar, except were not getting paid but oh well. Today we shot Adam and Rhys second video which was Waynes World parody piece about the various Oscars after parties. I directed this one using the clapperboard to call action and keep the cameras synced up.
Myself - Music Reaction
The second shoot of the day was myself again, meaning I didn't have a crew role but a presenting one. I presented this video alone which was challenging as it meant that I didn't have anyone to bounce off of and make conversation with but I managed it. I had made research notes about all the things I needed to cover In depth so I was well prepared, at times I was conscious that I looked to be reading from a script. The shoot went well and my director and crew kept me right during shooting, making sure I was looking into the right cameras and such.
Wednesday 1st of March
Chloe - Facts of the winners
As you can see by this picture of me looking stupid with a clapper board I directed todays first shoot, Some of us came in early in order to shoot Chloe's second video. We shot it early as lots of people including myself needed the time during the day to edit there pieces. Filming went well but took quite a while which was okay because we only had one other video to shoot that day. Chloe was a great host who knew her lines but at times some sections of the video took a few takes to do due to innocent slip ups but we got through it as the crew were patient.
As well as this the team also shot Jess's second video about the politics of the Oscars today however I was editing my music reaction video so I was not a part of the crew but I hear she did well.
Thursday 2nd of March
Today was the last day of the Ufilms Oscars Rundown and the last day will be going up today. Its been a long and tiring two weeks but the experience has been a rewarding one. We've made so much content over the space of 14 days that it's unbelievable. It all went really well and today we shot the group outro to confirm the end of the Ufilms Oscars Rundown which is set to go up this Saturday, signifying the end of the rundown.
