After I finish my journey here at Ufilms and move on to university I can use the skills that I have acquired here to start my own business. As well as potential starting my own branch of Ufilms Productions down in Hertfordshire my other main idea is to start my own private photography business.
During my time here at Ufilms I have developed production based skills and management based skills. These skills will help me run and manage my own business and my experience will help me create quality products. My business experience has mainly been in managing teams, using social media to market our business, helping create a brand and directing projects. As well as this I have practical experience in directing, editing and cinematography. Creating and managing a small business will require all of these business skills, for example I will need to create a brand for my photography business, this will include; coming up with a unique and creative name for my business, creating a logo and potential creating a website. If my time at Ufilms has taught me anything it's that a businesses social media presence is everything, social media is basically free advertising for your company. As well as this it can be used to grow an audience and fan based and a platform you can show off the content that you create. At Ufilms we have many social media accounts and if I am starting my own photography business this is something I will need to do. I will be able to use a Facebook page to manage lots of aspects of my business, for example on my Facebook page I can advertise my services and get in contract with customers, customers can see my business through Facebook and will be able to share my work with other users on facebook. This can help spread my reach greatly and mean that many more people can see my business, as well as this customers will be able to message me via my Facebook page meaning I have a platform to keep track of all of my customers on. Instagram will be another important social media tool as instagram is all about photos, having an instagram with loads of great high quality photos on can entice customers to use my services. The more social media reach I can get the bigger I can grow my company. Another thing Ufilms has taught me is that branding is key, a nice slick logo and name can help gain customers trust. A logo must be memorable because when people see it they have to associate it with your business. Having worked at Ufilms I have the experience and ability to know how to create a good logo.
I think these skills are more than appropriate to help me set up and run a successful photography business and potential create my own branch of Ufilms. Obviously the practical skills differ slightly between the two business however I feel my work here at Ufilms and doing photography in my own time has given me enough knowledge about cameras in order for me to create high quality photos for my own business and create high quality video content as part of my Ufilms branch.
As a private photographer I will have lots of sources of work. People need photography for all kind of events ranging from birthdays to weddings to more unique things such as 'baby cake smash' photos. I already have experience doing photography for birthdays and a christening and with Ufilms I have filmed a wedding so I know what the working environment at these kind of events is like and what will be expected from me. I also have experience in editing my own photos. I can use my social media presence to gain more sources of work.
Working at Ufilms has taught me that it is very important to work as a team however the staffing requirements for my new enterprise would be a little different. If I were to set up my own photography business I would be a sole trader and at first would probably not need any other members of staff. This is because I feel like I would be able to manage all the tasks of running a small photography business, If I where to grow and gather a significant amount of clients I could always bring someone in to be my photo editor or put someone in charge of my social media accounts. Alternatively if I were to set up my own branch of Ufilms then I would definitely need staff to help me, I would be able to recruit member's from my new university class.
My initial goals for my business would not just be to earn money but it would also be to grow a brand that could be recognised in the local area. I would like people to think of a high quality product when they here my name mentioned. On average photographers In the UK earn about £22 an hour, when charging for my photography services lots of things will have to be taken into account. I can use the way we charge people for our services here at Ufilms to help me work this out I need to figure out how much I should charge each client but will have to take into account the job, the travel, the equipment needed, the amount of photos wanted and the editing time.
